03. Growth of Mucuna bracteata

Mucuna bracteata grows fast and cover the field with in an year. A study on biomass production of Mucuna bracteata in a 5 year period showed 2.75 , 7.53., 5.35, 4.0 and 3.28 tonnes per ha respectively in 1,2,3,4,and 5 years growth in the field.Planting four cuttings in the inter rows of Hevea plants grew and covered an area of 25 m2 in six months. mucuna bracteata continue to grow up to 60 to 120 cm.Mucuna bracteata produced 5620 Kg  biomass in three years. underneath green biomass a layer of dried mulch of about 30 to 40 cm at different stages of decaying is observed. These dried leaves slowly decompose and add nutrients to the soil. Main crop utilise these nutrients, grow fast and yield more.Biomass production by Mucuna bracteata is higher than anyother Leguminous cover crops . It ranges from 5.6 tonnes in three years to 12 tonnes in four years .
